Kearl Oil Sands, Canada
In the Kearl Oil Sands, with an estimated 4.6 billion barrels of recoverable bitumen, a reliable site communication system is crucial due to the risks involved in open-pit mining operations. Johnson Controls provided a solution by installing two Public Address and General Alarm Systems (PAGA).
The PAGA systems enable the broadcasting of speech and alarm signals triggered from main access units or fire and gas panels. With 100-volt lines delivering audio to explosion-proof loudspeakers around the site, immediate alerts can be issued during emergencies. This robust communication setup has given the staff peace of mind and contributed to the site's increased capacity and safety. Continuous monitoring ensures the proper functioning of all systems, making Kearl Oil Sands a safer and more efficient operation.

Shah gas complex, Abu Dhabi
Johnson Controls successfully implemented a comprehensive Public Address General Alarm (PAGA) system at the remote Shah gas field in Abu Dhabi. With the gas field producing 1 billion cubic feet of gas daily and requiring a reliable safety solution, the PAGA system was designed to cover all plant areas with 80 ACE100 nodes for operational, pre-recorded and emergency broadcasts.
To meet the project's deadlines and accommodate the increased node count (originally 40-50, then expanded to 80), Johnson Controls introduced the innovative Broadcast Zone Mapper, simplifying data routing on congested networks. The final solution included over 174,000 watts of amplifier capacity and 160+ operator access units, ensuring the life safety of all operatives and supporting the critical operations of power, desalination, and petrochemical plants across the northern Emirates.
